Unfinished biographical insight about the cycling life and successes of Matej Mohorič, also the ambassador of L'Etape Slovenia
In 2008, when Tadej Valjavec was pushing milestones for Slovenian cycling and reached ninth place overall at the Tour de France, young Matej Mohorič stayed home alone for the first time during the summer holidays. It was precisely because of the bicycle that he did not go on that family vacation with his parents, but he spent a fortnight in a calm routine of everyday tasks on the home farm in Podblica, long training sessions and watching television in the afternoon.
Barely ten years later
Barely ten years later, Mohorič has already achieved everything that his role model only dreamed of - a two-time world champion in the U19 and U23 categories, he already had a victory in the Vuelta and the Giro in his collection, he just became the national champion for the first time, and in August 2018 he won two stage races in a row – Binckbank and the Tour of Germany. And he finally felt really good in his new team Bahrain Merida!
Although many experts predicted a championship future for him very early on and a lightning rise, he did not do well in the first few years among the professionals. Problems with weight, because of an incorrect nutritional regime, problems with adaptation to training at altitude, not best approach to training, failures and frequent resignations, many times made Matej think about his decision to become a professional cyclist. But he never gave up, and when he looks back today, he completely understands why it had to be like that - so that he could come out of it all stronger, faster, more mature and never repeat those mistakes again!
And indeed, after an incredible 2021 season, when he won the title of national champion for the second time and then in July winning two stage victories at the famous Tour de France, he started this spring even more violently: he became the first Slovenian to win the longest classic Milan-Sanremo in epic style. Also, this time in his style - downhill - where he used a new invention in road cycling, a submersible seat post with a remote lever.
At the end of last season, Matej decided to make another brave move, to write a cross-section of his life and cycling career so far with the author Uroš Buh. He published a book, an autobiography! And the stories that have started to come to light are sometimes absolutely incredible and, above all, breathtaking!
From the first wild rides with a mountain bike through the local villages, to breakneck descents with somersaults and landing in the hospital in Giro; a juicy story, seasoned with both falls and golden glitter, joy and tears, but above all with endless love for the bike. And once the reader gets to the end of the book, he actually just understands what is most important - Matej's journey is far from over!
For now, the book entitled MOHOpedia is available in the Slovenian language, it is available in all well-stocked bookstores in Slovenia.
