Cycling Oasis in the Heart of Slovenia: Vodice and L'Etape Slovenia
The municipality of Vodice has invested intensively in the development of cycling infrastructure in recent years and is a partner of the L'Etape Slovenia event every year.
Vodice, a picturesque oasis north of Ljubljana, covers an area of 31 km² and is home to just over 5,200 residents and 1,500 houses. It offers a unique opportunity for nature and cycling enthusiasts. The pristine natural environment, surrounded by hills, the Škofja Loka Hills, and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, creates stunning views that, on clear days, reach all the way to the Aljaž Tower in the Julian Alps.
Well-developed network of cycling routes
With a well-developed network of cycling routes and a rich natural and cultural heritage, Vodice is an ideal destination for an active getaway. Its inclusion in the prestigious L'Etape Slovenia cycling race further emphasizes its potential as an attractive cycling destination.
Developed Cycling and Mobility Network
In recent years, the Municipality of Vodice has made significant investments in developing cycling infrastructure. In collaboration with the municipalities of Domžale, Mengeš, Komenda, Medvode, and Trzin, they have established a network of safe cycling routes as part of the "Cycling Network" project, which promotes sustainable mobility and a healthy lifestyle.
The network, which includes 11 routes equipped with more than 200 directional signs, connects municipal centers with natural and cultural landmarks, with a special focus on the safety of vulnerable groups. Vodice is also part of the Gorenjska Cycling Network, which spans 640 kilometers of routes selected for their safety, scenic beauty, and accessibility to services. This project, involving 24 municipalities and the Slovenian Infrastructure Agency, sets unified signage and promotes tourism and sustainable mobility.
Natural and Cultural Attractions
In addition to excellent cycling routes, Vodice offers a rich natural and cultural heritage for cyclists to explore along scenic paths. At the viewpoint in Šinkov Turn stands the Church of the Virgin Mary from the 18th century, with historical roots dating back to 1526. In Skaručna, you can visit the Church of St. Lucia, known for the legend that the saint helps with vision problems.
Vodice also boasts the Church of St. Margaret, mentioned as early as 1118, and the Church of St. Nicholas in Zapoge, St. Stephen in Utik, and St. Tilman in Repnje. The Šinkov Turn Castle, built in 1250, is another significant landmark. While cycling, you can stop at Phlišek Pond or the Plague Memorial, both relics of the past. For a break, try the Vodiška Pretzel, made using an old recipe from the 18th century, preserved by the Jagodic family since 1932.
Cycling Routes for All Tastes
Cycling in Vodice offers something for everyone – from easy, flat routes ideal for families to more challenging climbs for experienced cyclists seeking steep inclines. One of the most popular routes is Vodice-Mengeš, which allows you to explore local attractions and nature. The cycling routes are well-marked on interactive maps, signs, and brochures.
