Welcome to the Municipality of Vodice
The Municipality of Vodice supports the organization of L'Etape Slovenia for the third consecutive year, and invites you to cycle through its places and villages.
The municipality, nestled north of Ljubljana and in close proximity to Jože Pučnik Airport (Airport Ljubljana), boasts an excellent transport position, as it is also near a highway exit. It borders six municipalities: the City Municipality of Ljubljana to the south, Medvode and Šenčur to the west, Cerklje na Gorenjskem to the north, and Komenda and Mengeš to the east.
Unspoiled nature waiting for you to explore
Located in a predominantly agricultural area, it is surrounded by rolling hills, the Škofja Loka Hills, and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. On clear days, views extend all the way to the peaks of the Julian Alps. The municipal core is small, with the majority of the municipality consisting of surrounding settlements that invite you to explore by bike with their unspoiled nature and idyllic, less-trafficked roads.
L'Etape Slovenia Ride and Race through Vodice
On Sunday, both the shorter - ride and longer distance - race will take cyclists through Vodice, entering from Smlednik. At approximately the 27th kilometer, they will reach the clustered village of Zapoge, already within the Vodice municipality. Vodice is adorned by the Church of St. Margaret, (sv. Majreta) mentioned as early as the 12th century; the Baroque church remained until 1895 when it had to be demolished due to severe earthquake damage.
Some attractions in Vodice
In Vodice stands the Šinkov Turn Castle, whose history dates back to 1250 when its builder Schenk erected a tall tower and strong walls. The castle changed hands several times, and in the mid-17th century, the original tower was demolished, and a new mansion was built, which was later remodeled multiple times. Owners and uses of the castle changed, and in 1943 partisans burned it down. In Repnje, Jernej Kopitar, one of the greatest European linguists of the 19th century, was born.
Establishing a Cycling Network
Vodice participates in the LAS Path Network project - LAS For the City and Village, aimed at creating a network of safe cycling connections spanning six municipalities, to promote sustainable mobility and an active lifestyle.
Famous Vodice Pretzels
Vodice is also known far and wide for its famous pretzels, baked by the Jagodič family for four generations, with a recipe dating back to the 16th century, passed down through generations.
You are invited to visit Vodice and enjoy in exploring it!
