Key Information for Participants of Sunday’s L'Etape Slovenia Challenge

A collection of key information for the participants of Sunday's test on the 80 km and 150 km L'Etape Slovenia route.

Both distances start simultaneously at 9:00 AM. This allows you to change your initial plan during the race: you can either complete the 80 km route or continue to finish the 150 km distance. The change is allowed regardless of your registration, and your result will be recorded in the appropriate age category.

Bib number pick up

Race number collection is only possible in person with a valid ID and the QR code sent to your email. If you have not picked up your race number at the Hervis store, you can collect it at the event venue in Kranj, in the Atrium of the Municipality of Kranj, Slovenski trg 1:

  • Saturday, 7th September 2024, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM
  • Sunday, 8th September 2024, from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM

Yellow and Black Race Numbers:

  • The color of your race number reflects the route you selected during registration for L'Etape Slovenia:
    • Black race number (1 to 999): Long route, 150 km
    • Yellow race number (1000 to 1700): Short route, 80 km

You'll receive a race number to attach to your back, a chip to place under your bike seat, and one to attach to the handlebars.

Participant Bag and Meal Voucher:

  • With the race number, participants will receive a goodie bag, including a voucher for a hot meal available at the event tent after the race.

Arrival at the Venue and Parking:

  • Participants who have already collected their race number should arrive at least 30 minutes before the start. For those who haven’t collected their race number, it can be picked up on the day of the event but only until 8:00 AM. Parking is recommended at the Supernova Mercator Savski otok shopping center, Stara cesta 25c, Kranj.

Race Start, Course, and Key Points:

  • The race starts simultaneously at 9:00 AM on Koroška Street, with the start area marked by an arch opposite Brioni Restaurant and Café.

Key Points on the Route:

  • Kilometer 0: Located at 6.6 km in Spodnje Bitnje. All cyclists must follow the official vehicle until this point; overtaking is not allowed as it is a closed ride.
  • Refreshment Stations:
    • Šenturška Gora, 50 km
    • Jamnik, 104 km
    • Srednja vas, 122 km
    • Križe, 131 km (water only)
  • Competition for Tour de France Jerseys (4 sets, participants on both 80 km and 150 km routes):
    • Polka dot jersey: Mountain stages at Šenturška Gora and Jamnik
    • Green jersey: Sprint segment at Predoslje, 60.6 km
    • Yellow jersey: Fastest participants
    • White jersey: Fastest young cyclist
  • Route Split Point: Jelenov klanec before the final stretch:
    • Right side of the road to finish the short route.
    • Left side of the road to continue on the western loop for the long route towards Besnica.

Participants can change the route during the race but must decide before the split point. Listen to your body on the day of the event.

Technical Assistance on the Course:

  • Basic technical assistance will be available with 5 vehicles positioned along the route. However, participants are advised to carry a spare tube in case the technical assistance is too far away.

Road Closure Schedule:

  • Road closures will follow a schedule based on an average speed of 25 km/h. Participants who do not maintain this pace will be informed by marshals and the final vehicle (the "broom wagon"). If removed from the official race, participants must follow regular traffic rules to continue. Read more about the time limit.

Police Vehicle with Red and Blue Lights:

  • The mobile closure lasts for 1 hour. When the police vehicle with flashing red and blue lights and the "end of closure" sign reaches you, you will be re-entering normal traffic and must follow traffic regulations. Continue cycling to the finish but be extra cautious as you are no longer on closed roads.

Participant Photos - Sportograf:

  • Sportograf is the official photographer of L'Etape Slovenia. To ensure the best photos:
    • Keep your race number visible at all times.
    • Smile whenever you see Sportograf photographers on the route.
    • Give an extra big smile when crossing the finish line.

Live Broadcast on Planet TV and Streaming:

  • The live broadcast will be available on Planet TV from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM, during which the fastest cyclists from the long route are expected to finish. The broadcast will include interviews and highlights from the race.

Dangerous Sections - Ride with Extreme Caution:

  • Km 6.6: Official race start
  • Km 9.7: Right turn in Sveti Duh towards Škofja Loka
  • Km 12.3: Sharp left turn in Škofja Loka near the fire station
  • Km 43: Two 30-meter gravel sections on the descent towards Tunjice
  • Km 55: Dangerous descent from Šenturška Gora to Cerklje na Gorenjskem
  • Km 80: Route split at Jelenov klanec (left side for the long route, right side for the short route finish)
  • Km 85: Use only the right side of the road for 300 meters (Gorenjesavska cesta to the ski jump)
  • Km 103: Descent from the mountain stage at Jamnik to Kropa
  • Km 106: Sharp chicane in Kropa
  • Km 109.5: Sharp left turn in Zgornja Dobrava followed by a dangerous descent
  • Km 124: Descent to Bistrica near Tržič
  • Km 141: Wooden bridge crossing

Safety Warnings and General Health Recommendations:

  1. Attention! Please maintain maximum concentration on the road. The race spans 150 km of roads. The peloton will be protected by 8 official race vehicles, 24 police motorcyclists, 20 marshals on motorbikes, police cars, 8 ambulances, 250 marshals stationed at dangerous points, and safety barriers. The organizers strive to ensure the safety of participants, replicating the Tour de France experience. However, there is always a possibility of oncoming traffic. It is impossible to fully enclose the entire route with safety barriers. Therefore, please remain vigilant. Take care of your safety and that of others.
  2. Assess your abilities realistically. Understand that your form and condition may vary, so carefully assess how you feel on the day of the event.
  3. Eat a nutritious breakfast before the race, including sufficient energy, vitamins, and minerals, and hydrate well to stock up your reserves.
  4. Carry a water bottle with something other than just water and a snack for the journey.
  5. For the long route, it is recommended that you have cycled at least 3,000 km in 2024.
  6. Emergency vehicles with red or blue lights always have priority! Whenever you see an official vehicle with flashing lights, move to the side of the road to clear the way. The race director will signal if the race needs to stop or slow down.
  7. Please ride with patience and collective responsibility.
  8. Be cautious on descents. Do not push beyond your limits, and ride within your capabilities. In case of wet roads, please be extra careful.
  9. Kilometer 0 is at 6.6 km in Spodnje Bitnje. Until this point, all cyclists must ride behind the official vehicle without overtaking.
  10. Enjoy a hot meal after finishing the race. The meal voucher is in your goodie bag received with your race number.
  11. Post-race massages with cooling gels by Pernaton will be available for tired muscles.

Winner Announcement and Tour de France Jersey Presentation:

  • 1:00 PM for the 80 km route participants.
  • 3:00 PM for the 150 km route participants.
