But can we get out of our skin and look critically at ourselves as, for example, at our neighbor? When we know exactly how to list all his weaknesses and shortcomings, including all the hidden ones. Well, it's similar in sports. It is difficult to assess your own fitness if you train all the time alone or in a group of similarly prepared people, and most likely always on the same terrain. It is also difficult to evaluate objectively because you are the most faithful "benchmark", the starting point for determining the comparative dose - in this case, fitness progress or loss of it.
The art is, therefore, to get out of yourself. And not only in sports, but also in general, if you want to objectively assess your own situation. We make a more correct decision if we achieve it based on two things:
- with a great deal of self-criticism
- with a high degree of awareness of the responsibility that follows the decision made.
What follows are the preparations adapted according to our conscious decision: Race or Ride, longer or shorter. And also: will we enjoy and bike to the destination at our own pace and our goal will be to reach the destination, or will we be dying for meals and panting "in red lights", triggered alarm, on the gills, half dead, but super satisfied with our over time. The rule of all group starts is, if you are not the best, always perform at your own pace and do not be tempted by the leeward of faster than you, because it can be fatal, especially in a too fast start.
Race or Ride - longer or shorter distance?
145 km with approx. 2,000 m elevation difference or 70 km with approx. 670 m elevation difference? Both routes are demanding, as they are very varied and present a certain technical challenge, but both are within the limits of the capabilities of recreational cyclists and offer wonderful views of the Gorenjska region panorama.
In any case, we start preparations as soon as possible, as systematically and as prudently as possible. For easier preparation and a more confident performance, files for downloading routes to a smart device are also available on the L'Etape Slovenia website, so that cyclists can familiarize themselves with the route itself. Also, every other Saturday as part of the Kranj Cycling Flower events from May to August, cyclists' get-togethers are organized in Kranj in the Khislstein castle courtyard, which are also an excellent opportunity to share cycling experiences. The gatherings will take place on 23 July and 6 August 2022.
